The Devastation of Hesitation

"I just can't seem to make up my mind!"

How many times have you heard someone say those words, even uttered them yourself? It seems we live in a day of indecisiveness and lack of conviction... Ladies, there are dangers to not being able to make up your mind! Our enemy seeks to cripple us and discredit the cause of Christ through this very avenue. Adolph Hitler wrote this, "Mental confusion, contradiction of feeling, indecisiveness, panic; these are our weapons." This is Satan's strategy as well! Often we delay doing things that seem large, difficult, boring, or disagreeable. But to continue putting them off shows lack of discipline, poor stewardship of time, and in some cases disobedience to God. It's time we made up our minds and fortified our hearts, as David should have...

2 Samuel 14:32-33 (KJV)
And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king's face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me. So Joab came to the king, and told him: and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.

Indecisiveness increases the possibility of bad decisions. For instance, there is much indecision over the issue of discipline these days. Discipline is hard and sometimes painful work, amen? In relation to the story above, David only made halfhearted efforts to correct his children, as you can see. He did not punish Amnon for his sin against Tamar, nor did he deal decisively with Absalom's murder of Amnon. He never took time to correct Adonijah. Such indecisiveness became Satan's weapon in David's life. He hesitated to face matters squarely and settle them with the Word of God. You see ladies, this parent avoided necessary confrontations with his children. (How about you??) Needless to say, the consequences were disastrous... So too, when you and I refuse to make a decision about sin, we experience greater pain than if we dealt with it immediately! Indecision is a want of mental firmness. There is a time when we must firmly choose the course we will follow or the relentless drift of events will make the decision for us...

John 3:36 (KJV)
He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Indecisiveness itself can be a bad decision. Jesus says that those who believe in Him have - not will have - everlasting life. Surely man would not hesitate to receive such a promise! Alas, but many do... John, the author of this Gospel, has been demonstrating that Jesus is the true Son of God. Ladies, Jesus Christ sets before us the greatest decision we'll ever make in life! He who hesitates is lost, amen? To hesitate is to suspend your mind from taking action. Remember though, the clock keeps ticking… Time is not suspended just because your mind is! Bring your unsettled mind to the finish line. We are responsible to decide today whom we will obey as Joshua 24:15 points out:

Joshua 24:15 (KJV)
And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

God wants us to choose Him and choose life for ourselves - while it is called Today... He calls us to be decision makers, to take action! When God says "today", the devil says "tomorrow"... The wrath of God is God's final judgment and rejection of the sinner. To put off the choice is to choose not to follow Christ. Hence, indecision can be a fatal decision! It can be too late to do the right thing. Good decisions have positive long-term results. Every choice for right sets into motion other opportunities for right. Bad decisions follow the same pattern, but in the opposite direction, away from the Lord and into Satan's reach! Isn’t it odd that the worst decisions are so easy to make and the best decisions are so hard for us to make? However, each decision you make to obey God will bring a greater sense of order to your life, while each decision to disobey will bring mental confusion and destruction. Though it’s so easy to squander time and let life slip from our grasp, deciding to obey the Lord brings us the greatest safety and security!

God Bless,
